So yeah. Hey there, folks. I've been busy lately with job stuff. Interview today and another one tomorrow. I think there's a third one afterwards, but so far, I might have employment, finally. Careerbuilder and Monster both payoff, but Careerbuilder seems to be the most active. Wish me luck.

Mar. 25th, 2009 02:16 pm Only 6 months late... That's just half a year!

12 most influential comics in my life. OK, Livejournal will NOT let me upload from my desktop...
Here we go, in no particular order.

1. Batman:The Killing Joke - The ultimate bad day for Jim Gordon. The end of the story has the Joker getting Batman to laugh at a rather bad and corny old joke, proving that Bats DOES have a sense of humor. This is quite possibly the best Joker story written.
2. Batman:Arkham Asylum - Why Arkham is such a hellhole, and what happens when you let the inmates run it. Another masterful tale about the Joker and Batman, delving into their psyches, and with artwork to match the dark, twisted and warped recesses of their minds and the asylum itself.
3. 100 Bullets - An amazing premise and an interesting spin on the whole conspiracy theory idea behind big government. Ask yourself: If you were wronged, would you seek vengeance if you knew you couldn't be caught? If you were above the law, would you break it? Tight and precise storytelling and solid artwork make this a fun read.
4. Lone Wolf and Cub - Another story about vengeance (I sense a theme or pattern...), except we see how it affects one man and his son. A classic tale that illustrates the notion that the price of getting what you want is getting what you once wanted, and that the lengths one goes to for vengeance may turn you into that which you hate.
5. Maus - Intense and thoughtful, a phenomenal retelling of the plight of the Jews in Germany through the medium of comics, based on actual experiences by the creator's parents. The use of animals do not in any way diminish the impact of the well crafted stories and the simple art belies the complexity of the narrative. A must read and instant classic in the genre of interpersonal independent comics.
6. Milk and Cheese - Dairy products gone bad! Mindless violence and snappy banter in the name of social commentary. True, they target large groups of the populace who really have it coming to them, and the humor is similar to Tom and Jerry, but there are some nuggets of wisdom to be found. Sure, I'm probably thinking too much, but honestly, it's funny, mean-spirited and a not so guilty pleasure of mine.
7. Transmetropolitan - Spider Jerusalem is a reporter. He has trouble writing articles for his column. A gross oversimplification of one of the BEST comics ever. Dystopian angst and corporate/political hijinx abound as Spider and his filthy assistants go searching for the truth in a world based on lies and deception. He reveals the seedy underbelly of society and the powerful, but at what cost? A shame it did not run longer, but at least it got to wrap itself up nicely at the end. Proof of Orson Welles' old cliche that ANY story has a happy ending, depending on where you end it.
8. The Spirit - 1930's pulp hero stories told with heart as well as mind and muscle. The prototypical two-fisted detective that never becomes stereotypical or trite. Visually stunning and well crafted stories are a hallmark of the godfather of the modern comics industry. Anyone who worked on Batman, hell, any action oriented comics owes this man a debt that can never truly be paid. Read this to learn pacing, storytelling, dialogue... any of the basic intangibles that most comics today lack. A true masterpiece of comics that stand up as well today as they did when first printed.
9. Watchmen - Dystopian retelling of the history of DC superheroes if they actually existed. Layers of meaning and parallels to history, both real and in DC canon are thoughtfully woven together to ask some heavy questions without becoming preachy or trite. There is a fine line between overbearing and intense, and while it blurs in some areas, it dances along it in others.
10. V for Vendetta - Although it might be seen as TOO British for some, the themes it present are universal. At what point do the populace stand up for themselves, and can one person really make a difference? It hums along at a nice pace mostly, but slows down in others to allow the reader to catch his breath and follow along. It never drags, and the ending makes you think. Sometimes, the best endings aren't always the neat and tidy ones.
11. Sam and Max - Surreality done right. Zippy banter, clever repartee and wacky characters collide in a world that's similar to ours, yet TOTALLY unique. Imagine if Groucho Marx, Dennis Miller and Mickey Spillane got together with Max Fleischer and Jean Arp to create a comic. This would be the result.
12. Doom Patrol - Misfit superheroes of the DC Universe unite to fight weird villains and deal with their own personal agendas and group dynamic. The best run in my opinion was drawn by Ted McKeever, master of the surreal, and written by Grant Morrison. Difficult to describe but certainly a blast to read.

It's hard to narrow down a list of this nature to just 12. Obviously some comics are going to be left out. For me, though, these 12 are a list of the ones I go back to for inspiration or just to get back that spark of insanity or creativity. Others include Strangers in Paradise, Scud the Disposable Assassin, Love and Rockets, Locke and Key and several others. As always, willing to discuss these, or your personal faves. Stay frosty, true believers.

Jan. 20th, 2009 07:54 pm Yay for whatever it is we're all cheering for...

So I did watch the inauguration for a few moments on the TV this morning, and frankly, was kinda disappointed. Obama messed up the oath on a few occasions, and then gave a bland, meaningless speech. People just went nuts over it, and I thought the whole event was kinda sad. I mean, he milked the whole MLK thing, and that's to be expected, but still this was just so hard to watch. Same buzzwords that got him elected, same meaningless promises and everyone was all wide-eyed and hyper like a mass of small dogs on the verge of wetting themselves. Really, we need more viable third parties in this country, and we need them soon. Otherwise, we're still being asked at the voting booths if we want to be punched in the face, or shoved off the sidewalk. Both are unpleasant, but it seems people will tolerate one more than another. Hope? Hope for what? Change? To what and from what? He hasn't answered these questions, he isn't answering them now, and I doubt he will in the future. Yeah, I'm not following the Obama bandwagon, or naming him the Second Coming of Jesus. Fine. I guess that means thinking for yourself once again is unpopular, but then again, I've never been the most liked person in the world, so why start (or stop) now. Birthday is this weekend. Call or whatever, peeps. Stay frosty, and be safe and happy this year, all of you.

Jan. 1st, 2009 11:48 am Grah...

Finally back. So I'm flying back home, and there's a stopover in San Francisco. Get there around 6PM, and there's a 2 1/2 hour layover until the next flight. It's delayed until 10, when they cancel the flight due to fog in San Diego. Next flight? 7AM the next morning, and they won't comp for a room, new policy. Seeing as I have no credit card or a spare $300 for a hotel room or even a means of transportation, I spend the night in the airport. Note that I did not say sleep, as the airport is loud and bright and uncomfortable. I tried to sleep on those rows of chairs, but they are not designed for sleeping, and barely for sitting. It was an orange level alert (elevated risk), which means no unattended bags. So, every time I wanted to go to the bathroom, walk around or do anything, all my stuff came with me. Finally, I get on the plane, only to watch FOG ROLL IN TO THE AIRPORT! The pilots get word from the tower that it's not that thick, and we take off. We get to the airport in San Diego, which is a zoo because it was closed yesterday. I go down to baggage claim, and they've got all 3 carousels running and hundreds of bags littering the floor. I wait by one carousel, my bag comes off the conveyor, and I call home and get a ride back after an event-filled 25 hours. Unpacked, went to sleep then went to a New Year's Party. So... sleep deprivation, diabetic spikes in both directions, weather issues, idiots in the airline industry as well as fellow travelers being morons and traffic in 2 major cities did not prevent me from getting home and celebrating New Year's. There's more to this story, but you'll have to call or visit to hear it. Asking nicely will probably work as well, and bribery with food and/or beverages is always appreciated. Stay frosty, my friends.

Dec. 22nd, 2008 07:32 pm RIP Evelyn Cook

My grandmother died today. After 2 years of dialysis, hospices and degenerating health, she finally passed on. I'm dealing with this in my own way, but it's kind of odd. She was my last grandparent, but now, she's with my grandfather, together again and for eternity. Sorry for the weirdness. Back to normal later.

Nov. 5th, 2008 08:39 am Aliens Versus Predator and the current political situation

I can't help but chuckle when people talk about how we 'won' with Obama as president. What did we win? More tax and spend socialism by the Democratic Party (motto: Holding America Hostage since the 1960's)? No thank you, I like my money. Still, it's better than McCain (Bush Jr.) and Sarah Palin (I'm not going to say what I think about her here because frankly I would use words and phrases that might get me slapped). What the hell was he thinking? The main reason McCain lost was because, like the rest of the Republican Party, he started thinking like a Democrat. Well, congratulations America, we could have picked a viable 3rd party candidate like Ron Paul or Alan Keyes, and we screwed up again by buying into a 2-Party system that is going to screw us over horribly. Nothing changed, and we're all to blame. It's like the tagline from the AvP film: No matter who wins, we lose. I still believe that if God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates. It's like the old saying goes, we don't get the government we want, we get the one we deserve. It's happened every election, and is further proof we should make IQ tests mandatory for voter registration, to keep out the idiots who vote Yes on Prop 8 and no on Prop B and still think 3rd parties are wasted votes. Me, I'm not sad or angry or moving to Canada yet, but if this all works out, I'll be shocked and pleasantly surprised. If Obama fails, I won't say I told you so because I didn't, but I will admit that I doubt he could do worse, or at least not be an improvement over the last 8 years of sheer incompetence. W, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld are a Mount Rushmore of neo-con pseudo-imperialistic stupidity, and knowing that by January that they'll be out of political office makes me happy to an extent. OK, deliriously happy like Christams wrapped in Thanksgiving and covered in strippers. Still, McCain could have won with a better running mate and he's not a bad guy, just he made too many mistakes and listened to the wrong people. I've always been and will continue to be a skeptic, not a disbeliever, just need to be proven wrong or right by circumstances. Too many of us stay ignorant of the world and hope. Hope is a sucker bet in politics, just expect the worst and go from there. I guess no one remember Jimmy Carter anymore. Let's hope (there's that word again!) Obama does, and moves in another direction, and picks the correct one.

Not really, but no one's tried yet.

18 Is it really fair to judge and damage the self-esteem of others in a poor attempt to make ourselves feel better?

Not really.

19 Is happiness worth the risk of temporary pain?
Life is pain. get happiness where you can and however you can get it. Fuck other people.

20 How does it feel to have left yourself wide open and allowed others to see through to the real you?

Intriguing.

1 You are alone with your girlfriend/boyfriend. No one is going to be along for a long time, and there is a guarantee that you wont be caught. Emotions are high and hormones kick in.

How far do you go?

As far as I can get away with.

2 Guys are told to use protection.

Do you subscribe to this line of thought?
Totally.

3 Your girlfriend or a girl from a one night stand is pregnant with your child.

What do you do?

Man up and take responsibility.

4 You become pregnant whether you give consent or not.

What do you do?

Not gonna happen.

5 You become infected with an STD. This may have happened before or during your marriage/relationship.

Do you inform your boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife?

Hell yeah! Responsibility is always the best course of action.

6 Assume you are married. You suddenly discover that you have no money left to your name. You will remain living this way if you stay married. The only way out of financial trouble is through divorce.

What do you do?

Move on.

7 Assume you are married. Your wife/husband is acting differently than they use to when you were first married. You become dissatisfied with your marriage. You attempt to talk to them, but they become defensive and precede you to blame you. You both feel as though the other is to blame.

What do you do?

Move on. No relationship is worth that much pain.

8 You walk past a homeless person. They ask you for some change so that they can buy some food. You have seventy five cents in your pocket and twenty dollars in ones and fives in your wallet/purse.

What do you give if anything?

5 bucks.

9 You are told that having a/another child may be fatal.

What do you do?

Male, so no preggies.

10 You are told that having a/another child will be fatal for your wife/girlfriend.

What do you do?

Stop having kids.

11 You are quite the little social butterfly. Every weekend you go to parties. Some people there you know. Others you dont. Theres alcohol there.

Do you stay?

Sure

12 Youre in the same situation, but assume that you stay. Youre offered a drink.

Do you take it?

Nope.

13 Assume the same situation, but you decide to drink.

Where do you draw the line and stop?

1 drink. If that.

14 Your best friend has started to date the person you've wanted to date for several months now. You never made your feelings known to anyone.

What do you do?

Chalk it up to my life sucks and go back to bed. I've been here before so many times...

15 The boyfriend/girlfriend of one of your friends has started to flirt and come on to you while still dating your friend. This friend is unaware of what's happening. You are slightly attracted to the guy/girl flirting with you. This friend is not your best friend. . . .

what do you do?
Go as far as she'll let me.

16 Your boyfriend is pressuring you to take your relationship to the next level physically. You don't want to lose him, and you're afraid that he’ll leave you if you say no.

Do you take the relationship to the next level physically?

Not gay, so no idea.

17 All of your friends are getting together on a weekend. They're telling you that they are going to get drunk. Your friends see this as acceptable behavior, and don't associate with people who don't agree with them. The only way to keep your friends is to go along with it . . .

what do you do?

Since most of my friends go out drinking on the weekends anyway, I just stay home.

18 Guys are told that it is ok to look at women as objects. They are encouraged to see women solely as objects of pleasure, and the concept of beauty is based solely on the physical appearance of the woman.

Should women be taken at face value literally, or i

Women are people, not things.

19 Popular culture says that guys have to have six pack abs and a tight butt to be appealing to women. Studies show that women prefer men who fit this description. Interestingly enough, most women will deny these results.

Why do you think that is?

Because women are shallow.

1 Have you ever liked someone and not told them how you feel?
Yes.

2 Had a crush on a brother/sister's friend?
Nope.

3 Favorite spot to be kissed?
Anywhere.

4 Dominant or submissive?
Both!

5 Would you live with your g/f or b/f?
Indeed.

6 Would you change yourself for someone?
Depends, but probably not.

7 Are you a virgin?
Yes.

8 Straight?
Yes

9 Gay?
No

10 Bi?
Maybe.

11 Would you/have you had a threesome?
Sounds like a possibility.

12 ever cheated on someone?
Nope.

13 Do you use protection?
Never had to.

14 Have you ever thought a teacher was hot?
A couple.

15 Made out with someone in school?
Nope.

16 Lied about the sex being good?
Nope.

17 Faked an orgasm?
Kinda hard to do that...

18 Been in love with more than one person at a time?
Oh yeah

19 Are you a player?
Sometimes, when I'm not a GM.

20 Have you ever been used?
By more people than I care to admit, and by those who refuse to admit it. You know who you are...

21 At what age did you receive your first kiss?
No idea.

22 Do you get jealous easily?
I dunno about easily...

24 Do you hide your feelings from those you care about?
Of course. Why give anyone ammunition?

Jan. 22nd, 2008 09:40 am Abuse? Listening to your last album, THAT'S abuse!

Quite possibly the funniest thing Spike Lee has ever said, and in retrospect, the truest. Hey there, kids. According to the clock, It's been 3 hours since I officially turned 35. I slept through it this time, not like I did 3 and a half decades ago. I don't feel 35. I feel at the same time both older and younger than this. Looking back, I never thought I would be at this particular point in my life. I thought I would either be dead or more successful. Somewhere in between is nice though. I thought I would pause and say thanks to all of you out there for all the support and whatnot over the years. I can honestly say I have the best group of friends and acquaintances evar, even if I don't always act like I appreciate it or care. it's part of the magic that is me. OK that last line sounded really hokey, and I apologize for it. Still, you all rawk. Go you! Got some stuff planned with friends today, but go ahead and drop me a message or call if you feels like it. As always, stay frosty and I bid you peace. Namaste, Motherfuckers!!!!

I Am A: Chaotic Good Human Wizard (4th Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-12

Dexterity-16

Constitution-13

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-16

Charisma-12

Alignment:
Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment because it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

Dec. 17th, 2007 03:58 pm Finally...

The Rock HAS COME BACK-

OK, no he didn't, but still. Here it is, a Christmas wish listy thing that runs here and on Myspace. Gonna be the same for the most part. Anyways, here it is.

Amplitude (PS2)
Frequency (PS2)
Def Jam Vendetta (Gamecube)
Def Jam Fight for New York (GameCube)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Gamecube)
Simpsons Hit and Run (Gamecube)
Starfox Adventures (Gamecube)
Mario Kart Double Dash (Gamecube)
Any Dreamcast, PS2 or Gamecube games you think I would like. Sonic and Mario are always welcome in this house, but I dig anything.
New PS2 Controller

Music CD's of all sorts. Anything you like I probably will if it isn't pop mainstream stuff or nu-metal or that sort of thing. Whatever weirdness you think I would be into will be all right.

Eris knows I have enough art supplies, but sketchbooks and other media are always welcome, as well as sets of drawing pencils and erasers, since I go through them like a chainsaw through a zombie.

Dice. Oh dear Gaia do I love me some dice.

DVD's :Wall Street, Training Day, anything yoga/tai chi/pilates related, any film deemed must own by the movie mavens out there, and you know who you are. Speaking of which, those weird power bands they use to exercise with, A set of those would rawk.

Books of all sorts. If you think I need something sci fi/fantasy or whatever, hook me up. I read anything, everything.

Gaming wise, don't worry about me unless you can get it cheap. In that case, first run Shadowrun (1st or 2nd edition), Legend of the 5 Rings (d10 system please) and 7th Sea would be appreciated, or just any cheap system that you think I could run or just get a kick out of because there's a lot of weird stuff out there.

Sugar-free chocolate, cookies and other desserts exist. Anything you think is snackworthy and relatively healthy.

Telltale Games has the Sam and max Season 1 and 2 on sale. Also Popcap Games are fun and always appreciated. Also, a preorder of A Fool and his Money would rawk.

Singing bowls and other buddhist imagery would be appreciated.

That just about covers it. Of course, you could always surprise me with things, and that's cool as well. Speaking of shopping, I need to do that this week. Anyone feeling brave/foolhardy enough to join me, go ahead and call. We shall brave the madding crowds and chaotic hordes together. We will give no quarter, show no mercy and take no prisoners. Afterwards, perhaps a celebration of sorts. Message me here or call or IM or whatever. Until then, stay frosty, enjoy the holidays and just relax. IF YA SMELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL WHAT THE ROCK IS- oh forget it...

Dec. 1st, 2007 01:23 am Music, sweet music I wish I could caress...

Yet another musical reference. Go figure...

First, the Toyota is dead. End of an era, huh? I put backseats in the van, so yeah, the jokes are gonna keep coming. Meh, that's all right.

My dad came down for the weekend. It was a short visit, but all right. My parents are getting divorced. I'm not sure what to think of it. I mean, they separated back in '94, so it isn't a complete shock. Money is gonna be tight, and I'm looking for work and a new place. I'm in the 'my resume and portfolio look like crap and my job history sucks but I am trying to update' phase. Maggie helped me with job postings online and such. She rules. I sent out emails and such.

Got to exercise today, that was good. I need to do more of that.

Me and my computer have been seeing a lot of each other. Photoshop and other software are taking up my time. I want to learn some new languages, like coding. Been listening to a lot of music, all sorts. Right now, I'm in this really weird state of mind. The drive home from Christina's was weird. IThe radio was actually cooperating with the good music. Now, I'm not sure what to do. Being around people is nice. I should do that more often. I guess I'm lonely and a little bored, even with everything going on. So if you're free, give me a call or IM me or whatever. drop by and see me here or something if I am free and you are as well. Yeah, I'm needy. Well then.

That's it for now. The rain is nice, pity it won't last very long. Stay frosty, puddle jumpers.
